ARTIST OF THE DAY:ARTIST OF THE DAY: Yes its me today, or as that lady in the
perfume advert said "Oui, c'est moi!", though I don't smell as nice after
all the running around I've being doing the last few days.
Not going to bore you all with too much about me.
For 5 GO DOWN TO THE SEA I have created a group of paintings
that are very different from the works in my recent solo show SHORE THINGS
(which was also at TBay and is currently at Oceanics Surf & Marine Centre).
This time I felt that as T-Bay Surf Club have provided an
exhibition space that maybe I should give them some work
that they would be able to identify with, so, surfers.
It was a subject I was a little scared to approach because
I don't feel that qualified, not being a bona fide surfer.
I do, though, love the sea and swim through the year.
I go out and get knocked around on my bodyboard quite a bit
and I have long wanted to capture the energy of being in the sea.
I hope I have made a start with these small pieces.

5 GO DOWN TO THE SEA ARTIST OF THE DAY
ARTIST OF THE DAY:ARTIST OF THE DAY:Catherine Green is yet another versatile
artist-indeed all of the artists here can turn their hands to just about anything.
Catherine ran away to the circus when she was seven and three quarters.
After an internship as a relocator of Loxodonta excreta,
Catherine became a star aerialist(well you did tell me I could make something up;)
....no really Catherine has been drawing , painting and photographing
water for years but has also done lots of installation and 3D work.
Whatever takes her fancy. Alot of her work is dictated by process and materials.
Catherine turned her home into an art gallery for the Kilkenny Arts Festival
and I was invited to throw in a few pieces so we are delighted to invite her
to throw some drawings into 5 GO DOWN TO THE SEA. Thanks Cathy.
5 GO DOWN TO THE SEA ARTIST OF THE DAY
in Dublin and one of the friends I made when I was there was Maeve Hunter.
Though Maeve was bringing up two young children on her own she was a
very creative person and her dream was to go to art college.
Maeve has doggedly pursued her dream and acheived a degree
from the NCAD in 1993, her HDip in 2000 and this year
is returning to do her masters. Maeve works mainly in textiles
but has created some drawings especially for us.
Go to Maeves FaceBook page and have a look
at some of her beautiful creationsMAE-DEC ART
5 GO DOWN TO THE SEA ARTIST OF THE DAY
ARTIST OF THE DAY:5 GO DOWN TO THE SEA was originally myself and
Laura Cull but Julie Cusack joined us very soon after we had begun discussing a show.
Because she lives close by, Julie has had quite a bit of input and her ideas
have made this show something more than just another group exhibition.
It was Julie who thought of the collaborative piece and of using drawings
which has enabled others to contribute to make this a great coming together of artists.
Julie studied at Waterford Art College, moved to the States for the best part of a decade.
On her return she continued her studies in Galway,
eventually settling in Kilkenny where she is a member of Endangered Studios.
Like Laura, Julie is a painter of great depth, though both are unique painters,
both reach beyond the concrete to capture the essence of things,
feelings, moments, relationships.
It would be easy to get lost in one of Julies works.
For 5 GO DOWN TO THE SEA, Julie has created some beautiful dreamy seascapes, don't miss them.

5 GO DOWN TO THE SEA ARTIST OF THE DAY
ARTIST OF THE DAY:I Love Lauras, Annies and Julies work in part because its so different
from my own whereas I love Eric Rewitzers work because it springs from the same
place mine does. To my mind we both use form as a starting point on a journey
that takes us beyond form sometimes even to the abstract.
We both use the everyday to explore the beauty that, once you start looking,
can be seen in everything. Just look at his cranes, a landscape of a dockyards
but the strong cool blue lines bisecting fiery and amorphous skies
are a paeon to form and colour.
Eric is also including some of his wonderful funky robot prints,
and there are many more prints to be found on 3fish Studios website,
check it out and LIKE 3 Fish Studios FaceBook page to get news of their adventures,
their output is inspiring. 3 FISH STUDIOS
I am writing a little more than I have for the rest of us because Eric
can't be with us for the opening of the show as he has returned to San Francisco
to take part in Roadworks, a project that involves using a steamroller to roll out ink
with the road as letter press to produce very large scale prints,
if anyones around San Fran,
heres the link. ROADWORKS
We'll miss your presence on friday Eric but glad to have Annie to represent you both and 3 Fish.

ARTIST OF THE DAY:There are rumours around that
I used to babysit for Karla K but this can't be true as it would make her an incredibly
young DJ prodigy though it would explain why shes turned out to be so groovy...;)
Karla Kelly has been dj'ing @ parties since her teens.
Discohousefunkboogie is her favourite flavour although she loves everything from
rock to pop to punk to funk. Karla has also developed and teaches House yoga,
a funky music driven take on traditional yoga moves.
Check out-and LIKE her FaceBook page, The House of Yoga,
better yet check out some of her classes.
Looking forward to some good tunes next Friday Karla:) HOUSE OF YOGA
5 GO DOWN TO THE SEA ARTIST OF THE DAY
ARTIST OF THE DAY:Annie Galvin moved to the U.S. after studying design in Waterford.
There she met Eric Rewitzer and together they founded 3Fish Studios in San Francisco,
which manages to be both a laid back centre for creativity and a powerhouse of production.
Annie Galvins stylish paintings and drawings are immediately recognisable,
from her funky California road signs, to her hip girls and laid back bears.
Its great to have Annie on board, both as an artist
and as a vibrant connection between Tramore and San Francisco.
Check out 3Fish Studios website for more work 3 FISH STUDIOS

5 GO DOWN TO THE SEA ARTIST OF THE DAY
ARTIST OF THE DAY:George Roe is contributing 8 drawings to 5 GO DOWN TO THE SEA
My mysterious friend George painted all his life but had never been to art college.
When he did go back he graduated from Waterford Art College with distinction.
George normally works on a large scale, one of his heroes is Hughie O'Donoghue,
so I am delighted to get some drawings from him for this show and they are gorgeous.
He has also included some of his famous choughs which he did for
our Garrarus show a few years back and which were very popular.
I say he's mysterious as you won't see alot of his work around
the place as he is very measured in his approach to showing.
Glad to have you on board George.

ARTIST OF THE DAY: Paul Bolger studied at Waterford college of art
and went on to forge a very successful career in film and animation.
Paul also plays music, takes photographs, paints, draws and is generally
one of those versatile people who should make us all sick except he's very nice with it.
Paul has just dropped off the drawings that he is contributing to 5 GO DOWN TO THE SEA
..tons of them and all very beautiful, you would be really crazy to pass up the chance
of adding some of his work to your collection(all the drawings in the show are €10 a pop)
but you'll have to get there before me:)
Check out Pauls website here... PILLARSTONE
5 GO DOWN TO THE SEA ARTIST OF THE DAY
Laura Cull is a mixed-media artist who lives and works in Connemara
in the west of Ireland. She was born in Cork and studied painting in the
College of Art & Design, Waterford, graduating in 1991. For 5 Go Down to the Sea
Laura has departed from her usual mixed media pieces to create more free flowing
sea-like paintings. I think these pieces are beautiful, I love their sea-ness.
Looking forward to seeing them hanging next week. This piece is called Mermaid.
